山丹县东邻永昌,南接青海,北连内蒙古阿拉善右旗,总面积5400平方公里,辖6镇2乡,总人口21万人,是丝绸之路旅游黄金线路的必经之地,素有“走廊蜂腰”、“甘凉咽喉”之称。312国道、G-30连霍高速公路、兰新铁路双线和客运高铁贯穿全境,距飞机场60公里,交通便利、通讯快捷,是甘肃省首批“县域旅游产业开发示范县”。

山丹旅游资源丰富,文物古迹众多,境内有史称“世博圣地”的省级森林公园、国家AAAA级旅游景区焉支山;有“世界第一”号称“中国马都”的山丹军马场;有国内保存最完整、被专家誉为“露天长城博物馆”的汉、明长城遗址和“锁控金川”硖口古城堡;有国际工合事业的开创者、新西兰著名的社会活动家、伟大的国际主义战士路易·艾黎故居和捐赠的4000多件珍贵历史文物陈列馆,有路易·艾黎与英国著名记者、国际反战和平人士乔治·何克一起创办的培黎学校;有被国内外佛教界人士誉为“天下第一佛”的亚洲最大室内泥胎贴金坐佛、国家AAAA级旅游景区大佛寺。山丹,还有雅俗共赏的烙画剪纸,精美别致的文物复制品,雄悍张扬的胡腾舞、山丹舞狮等民俗文化产品,有山丹四珍、绿色蜂蜜、旱地西瓜等土特产和风味独特的羊肉垫卷子、搓鱼子、油糕、炒拨拉等地方特色小吃,都体现了山丹深厚的文化底蕴。

Shandan County lies south of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region with Yongchang County in the east, and is also bordered by Qinghai Province. Shandan has a total area of 5400km² with a jurisdiction over six towns, two townships, and a total population of 210,000 people. Shandan is an important site on the ancient Silk Road golden line, also known as the "Waist in Hexi Corridor" or the "Gansu Throat". The China National Road 312, G - 30 Highway from Lianyungang to Khorgos, Railway Line from Lanzhou of Gansu to Urumchi Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and high-speed rail for passenger transport runs through the whole territory. Shandan is located 60 kilometers from Zhangye airport, with convenient transportation and fast communications. Shandan is also one of the first counties to undergo tourism industry development in Gansu Province.

Shandan is rich in tourism resources and numerous cultural relics. It is also the location of the historical Mt. Yanzhi Forest Park, an AAAA-level scenic spot. Shandan is known for the world’s largest Army Horse Farm, which is also called the Horse Capital of China. The Great Wall ruins of Han & Ming Dynasties, which lie parallel to each other, are regarded as the “Museum in the Open Air” and the most protected and completed parts of these Walls are in Shandan. The late Rewi Alley from New Zealand is well known in Shandan as a pioneer for the Industrial Cooperatives movement, a famous social activist, and a great international fighter. Alley's extensive contributions to the county is held at his former residence and there are more than 4000 pieces of precious historical relics donated by him to the Shandan Museum. Rewi Alley alongside famous British journalist, and international anti-war peacekeeper, George Hogg, founded Shandan Bailie School together. Shandan Giant Buddha Temple, in which is the largest seated clay one covered with gold leaf in Asia, is a national AAAA-level scenic spot. Pyrography, paper cutting, Huteng dance (a typical dance representing minority nomad groups in ancient Northern China) and souvenir cultural relics are examples of local art in Shandan. Shandan is home to delectable local cuisine such as natural honey, watermelon, mutton, cuoyuzi (small fish-shaped noodles), and chaobola (local meat dish). The local food reflects Shandan’s rich and profound cultural background.

Aside from food and scenery, Shandan is strong in its artistic culture including folk art from the ancient times. Visitors are encouraged to soak up the local sightseeing opportunities, relax, get involved in local projects, and pursue further research.
